Straight from Havana: The Latest in Cuban Cigars

Last week, Akil was at the Habanos Festival celebrated in Havana, Cuba. The festival is dedicated to the best tobacco and premium cigars in the world: Cuban tobacco and cigars. It is a week of activities that includes conferences, visits to tobacco plantations and factory tours to highlight the origin and the culture surrounding Cuban cigars. The most anticipated night, the Gala Dinner, takes place on the last day of the Festival. Guests get the chance to participate in cigar auctions, an exquisite meal, great entertainment and the opportunity to sample new cigars before they are released to the market.

This year, we celebrate the 25^th anniversary of the Habanos Festival, along with the 15^th anniversary of the Cohiba Behike line, one of the most sought-after cigars lines, and the 150^th anniversary of the Romeo y Julieta brand, one of the most historic and renowned Cuban brands.

The biggest news from the Festival was the announcement of the Cohiba Behike BHK 58, a new size in this line (7 inches long by 58 ring gauge). Participants at the gala, got the opportunity to sample the new Cohiba.

The production of the Behike Line is extremely limited and exclusive. It is produced at the El Laguito factory in Havana. The new cigar will have footbands and an updated packaging and bands to deter counterfeiters. Like all Behikes, the BHK 58 is finished with the familiar pigtail and comes in a box of 10. Cohiba stands above the other brands due to its tobacco being selected from the top five farms of Pinar del Rio, an area known for its unique rich-soil, where the Cuban tobacco is grown. The leaves also undergo an additional fermentation process, but only Behikes contain medio tiempo, a rare sprouting of two potent leaves that grow on the very top of some, but not all, tobacco plants.

We don’t expect to see Cohiba Behike BHK 58 in Canada immediately. Usually, cigars exhibited at the Habanos Festival don’t make it to stores for some time after the announcement.
