Caran d’Ache 849 Pens

Caran d’Ache was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1915 and it’s a fourth-generation family business. Originally known as Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons, it specialized in graphite and colour pencils. In 1924, the brand was renamed Caran d’Ache, after the pseudonym of the Russian-French satiric political cartoonist Emmanuel Poiré, who in turn took his pen name from (karandash) Caran d’Ache, the Russian word for pencil.

Throughout its history, Caran d’Ache has created and produced innovative pencils and pens of distinction. In 1969 the iconic 849, a hexagonal-shape pen made from long-lasting aluminum, was put on the market. The Caran d'Ache 849 was well received by everyday-pen users due to its simpler finish and well-built composition. The company realized that they could customize the pens with unique finishes and colour combinations to pique the  interest of contemporary consumers. Since then, Caran d’Ache has been so successful that it now has a presence in more than 90 countries and has made collaborations with well-known designers and artists like Paul Smith, Yves Klein and Keith Haring, and has also introduced the popular 849 Claim Your Style Limited Edition pens.

The 849 pens, and specially the Claim Your Style Limited Editions, can complement any attire and fashion accessory because the designers at Caran d’Ache are always on the lookout for the next colour trends. They are all about mixing and matching colours to create unique pens designed to express one’s style and personality.
